Writing Sprints: What They Are and How They Boost Productivity: Seriously, They Work!

There's magic in 25 minutes of creating and 5 minutes break!

Adding the positive social pressure of doing sprints with others online, with the added endorphins of a community connection? You will get more work done than on your own.

Why? Because you have a finite amount of time to focus. You have a break for recovery, and then you get to build momentum from your success.

This article explains all the reasons why a "Pomodoro" sprint works, for any work that needs to get done, if you'd like to dig deeper!

When I flip that purple cube in the picture (the one the dragon is eating) and start a sprint, the rules are simple. Keep working. As Jane Yolen says, "Butt in chair." Until the timer beeps.

I keep an open lined notebook beside me to jot down anything that flitters into my brain that isn't about the work I'm focusing on during the sprint. That way I'm not anxious that I'll forget anything on my to-do list. Rather than bouncing between tasks (here's why multitasking doesn't work!)

Doing these sprints together really makes a difference in productivity and accountability.

Which is why during the month of August (2025), we're sprinting every weekday morning starting at 10am ET.

Consider this your invitation. If you haven't yet received your 30-day gift of membership for August, email us at writersloftms(at) gmail (dot) com and ask us to add you into all your membership perks including doing sprints in our online private (and off the socials) community.

You'll get a notification when we go live in our meetups; join us, say hi, and then it's off to work!

See you at the Loft!
